■ YAPC::Asia 2006 Tokyo 1日目「Introduction to Pugs」の翻訳
YAPC::Asia 2006 Tokyo の一番最初の発表「Introduction to Pugs」の翻訳を私が担当することになっていたので徹夜で作業。ギリギリになってしまいましたが何とか間に合いました。
Introduction to Pugs（高橋メソッド日本語版）
本当は英語の発表資料に映画の字幕のように日本語訳を付ける予定だったのですが、Audreyたんのアツイ要望で英語を極力排除した日本語onlyのスライドを準備することになりました。日本語のスライドを見せながら通訳なしで発表者がそのまま英語で話すというちょっと新鮮なスタイルでした。
Audreyたんが日本向けにテロップを付け直した動画motd.p6（日本語字幕）の翻訳も載せておきます。

この翻訳には大変気を使いましたが、私の力不足により、元の英語のニュアンスが失われてしまった部分も多かったと思います。YAPCの舞台裏ということで、ある1行の翻訳のやりとりの例を紹介したいと思います。
最初 "Pugs is caching in the tuits." の意味が分からなくてAudreyたんにメールで教えてもらいました。

I have no idea how to render this in non-English languages...
ということで、近くいた英語に詳しい秋元さんにバトンタッチ。
wikipedia の説明からは、tuit が「本当にやるべきこと」で、
Round tuit(to it)は、「すべきことをせずに、そのまわりのほかのことばかりしてしまうこと」、つまり、procrastination, 現実逃避、といった意味。
まだ caching in とのつながりがよくわからないですが。。。
で、さらに出先からラボの掲示板を見た奥さんがつないでくれて
本屋のロングマンによるとcash in
to make profit from a situation in a way other people think is wrong or unfair
だそう。haskell使ってることに対する皮肉まじりの賛辞？
というところまでなんとか理解することができました。
ですが、これらをどうまとめたらいいのか困って"I'm not confident of this translation..."と翻訳に自信がない旨をメールしたら最後に宮川さんがAudreyにIRCで詳細を聞いてくれて、
After a brief conversation (and explanation on this) with Audrey on
IRC, it turns out that it means something like "Pugs is unleashing
people's suppressed spare-time-energy".
→「Pugs は人々の抑圧されたハック魂を解き放ちます！」という日本語訳にたどり着きました。
こんな感じで、今回この翻訳作業に携わることができて、私自身とても勉強になりました。
